In August 2026, the GTI-Producers registered 52.1%, up 2.0 percentage points from the previous month and above the critical value (50%) for two consecutive months, indicating an upward trend for the timber harvesting and primary processing industries in the pilot producing countries.

In Asia, Indonesia, Thailand, and Malaysia recorded GTI readings of 47.9%, 45.6%, and 29.7%, respectively, all below the 50% critical value and in contraction territory. On the supply side, Indonesia’s harvesting volume rose from the previous month while production shifted from growth to flat, pointing to overall stabilization of production activity. Malaysia’s supply-side contraction persisted, with harvesting remaining subdued and production declining further. Thailand’s harvesting volume fell for a fifth consecutive month, and production moved from expansion into decline. This month, the three countries faced distinct supply-side challenges. Indonesian sample enterprises reported that they were constrained by rainfall and high transport costs; Malaysian companies contended with log price volatility and insufficient raw-material inventories; and Thailand’s timber sector was affected by heavy rains and other disruptions. On the demand side, Indonesia’s new orders reversed three consecutive months of growth and turned downward, though the export market showed signs of stabilization. Malaysia’s orders remained weak in both domestic and export markets. Thailand’s new-order volume declined, driven primarily by softer export demand.

In Africa, the Republic of the Congo (ROC), Ghana, and Gabon posted GTI readings of 50.0%, 49.1%, and 38.2%, respectively. The Congo held steady at the critical value, while Gabon and Ghana were in contraction territory below it. On the supply side, Gabon’s harvesting volume declined for a seventh consecutive month and production shifted from growth to contraction. In the Congo, both harvesting and production volumes moved from modest declines to flat, indicating stabilizing production activity. Ghana’s harvesting volume fell for an eighth straight month, with production decreasing for a second consecutive month. Overall, the downward trend in African harvesting volumes was pronounced. On the demand side, new orders declined in both Gabon and Ghana, while the Congo’s new-order volume held steady.

In Latin America, Brazil, Mexico, and Ecuador recorded GTI readings of 59.2%, 41.2%, and 39.6%, respectively. Brazil remained in expansion territory for a second consecutive month, while Mexico and Ecuador continued to operate below the critical value in contraction. On the supply side, Brazil’s harvesting and production volumes both continued to rise. Mexico’s harvesting and production volumes declined for a second straight month. Ecuador’s harvesting volume fell for a third consecutive month, and production registered its first decline in the recent six months. On the demand side, Brazil’s new orders rose for a fourth consecutive month. Mexico’s new orders declined for a second month, largely reflecting weaker export markets. Ecuador’s new-order volume fell for a fourth straight month, with domestic demand exerting a more pronounced influence.
